MASTA ACE

Legendary emcee Masta Ace has announced the release of his next album The Falling Season for May 13th. To be released via M3 Records/hhv.de this will be his first official album release in over ten years, though story-wise it can be considered a companion to his MA Doom (2012) project. That previous project (pairing Ace’s lyricism over M.F. Doom’s beats) was centered on Masta Ace (born Duval Clear) childhood in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The Falling Season contains interlocking skits that follow the artist through his high school years (1980-1984) at Sheepshead Bay High, the football team and the divergent paths him and his peers take.

Speaking on choosing to recapture this period of his life on the album, Ace relates “doing these albums is therapeutic to me. I did MA Doom to honor my mother who is no longer with us and this album is me reflecting on memories and people that meant a lot to me.” Ace even went as far as to put the sons of his former Sheepshead team-mates on the album to portray their father’s in skits. His football coach from this time period also appears on the album as well.

Musically, a lot of people who also mean something to Ace appear as well. The all-star list of guests includes Chuck D, Cormega, A.G, Your Old Droog, Wordsworth, Stricklin, The World’s Famous Supreme Team, Queen Herawin, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Pearl Gates and Pav Bundy. The first leak from the album “Me And AG” just premiered via XXL Magazine and features Ace trading the raw lyrical with AG (Showbiz & A.G., Diggin’ In The Crates Crew). Speaking on that collaboration Ace said “that collaboration was the hardest to make happen as AG was in Japan during the time we were recording. He was pretty
busy so he didn’t know if he could get in a studio before we had to finish. Luckily he was able to do it and it was dope!”

In addition to a deft display of lyricism, the entire album is a showcase for Los Angeles based Producer Kic Beats. Previously producing tracks for the likes of Kurupt, Canibus and eMC Masta Ace selected Kic after a year-long search for the proper partner for this album. Of the experience Masta Ace said “Being an independent project, I went into this album knowing that I didn’t want to worry about sample clearance. I started a search for the right producer who could capture the mood of the album without being sample heavy. Kic was that man; he uses mostly live instrumentation and manipulates it so it has that warm/fat sample feel.”
